In preparation for the construction of a new middle school campus approved by voters, the Ascension Parish School Board has officially approved the transition of Lake Elementary School from a single K-8 campus into two separate schools: Lake Primary School (Grades K-5) and Lake Middle School (Grades 6-8).
The change will take effect for the 2026-27 school year and represents the next step in a long-term plan to support the rapidly growing student population in the Lake community.
In 2024, Ascension Parish voters approved funding to construct a dedicated Lake Middle School campus adjacent to the current Lake Elementary site. Groundbreaking on the new facility is expected this fall.
While construction moves forward, district leaders emphasize that the transition will be virtually seamless for students and families.
“Creating two schools now allows us to build the leadership and support structures necessary for a successful transition when the new middle school campus opens,” said Superintendent Edith M. Walker, Ed.D. “Parents and students should expect little to no disruption. Students will continue attending classes in their current areas of the campus, transportation routes will remain the same, and visitors will continue using the existing front office.”
The most significant change will be the addition of dedicated administrative teams for each school. Under the new structure:
- Lake Primary School will be led by a principal and an assistant principal serving grades K-5.
- Lake Middle School will be led by a principal and an assistant principal serving grades 6-8.
Currently, the K-8 campus operates under one principal and two assistant principals. District leaders believe the new structure will provide more focused support for students, teachers, and families while better addressing the unique academic and developmental needs of elementary and middle school students.
“This change is about positioning our schools for the future while improving support for students and staff today,” said Ascension Parish School Board President Jared Bercegeay. “As our community continues to grow, we want to ensure our schools grow with it.”
Along with the organizational transition, Ascension Public Schools is unveiling new logos for both Lake Primary School (see top of page) and Lake Middle School. The updated branding maintains the school’s beloved mascot and visual identity while establishing distinct school identities that will carry forward for years to come.
