Babysitter arrested for Negligent Homicide in drowning investigation

Detectives with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office Juvenile Unit have arrested Joann Johnson, 37, of Prairieville in connection with the drowning death of a 3-year-old. She is charged with one count of Negligent Homicide.

On Monday, May 18, at approximately 3:50 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call regarding a drowning at a residence on Roy Rogers Road in Prairieville. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim. Deputies and medical responders attempted lifesaving measures, including CPR, before the child was transported to an area hospital by Air Med. The child was later pronounced deceased.

During their investigation, detectives learned Johnson was operating an in-home daycare at the time of the incident. Surveillance video obtained by detectives showed two young children who were in Johnson’s care playing near a swimming pool in the backyard of the residence without any safety wear. The victim fell into the pool and subsequently drowned. He remained unconscious in the pool for approximately 20 minutes before Johnson was observed retrieving the 3-year-old.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Johnson, who turned herself in on Wednesday, June 3. She was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.

The accused was released from Ascension Parish Jail on June 3 at 6:24 p.m. on a bond of $100,000.
