Rematches abound for two east bank elections for Justice of the Peace (a third seat, on the west bank, saw the incumbent reelected without opposition). The same goes for one race for Constable for the Second Justice Court, with a 26-year incumbent facing a challenge for the first time in the Third Justice Court. Of all the elections on the ballot, these are shaping up to be the most bitterly contested between candidates who do not like each other.
Not so on the west bank where Tamiko Francis Garrison won reelection without opposition in the First Justice Court, as did the court’s Constable, Jeffery Henry.
Grenades are already being lobbed in the Third District Court elections, especially at the top of the ticket where both candidates are running as the incumbent.
John Hebert is seeking a fourth election to the office, but he is not the current Justice of the Peace. Hebert has beaten the officeholder on two occasions, by ten percentage points in 2014 and a much closer margin in 2020. In 2008 he beat the incumbent, Jamie Frederic Braud, by a 53-47% margin.
But, it is Lynelle Johnson who occupies the Third Justice Court’s top position at present. Johnson won a December 11, 2021 runoff against Kim Landry in a Special Election called after John Hebert resigned.
Down ballot in the Third Justice Court, a challenger has emerged against James LeBlanc who has been the constable for 26-years. LeBlanc’s has served alongside four different Justices of the Peace, a steadying influence amid frequent turmoil emanating from Justices of the Peace and wannabes.
His opponent, Clint Boe, is a retired Ascension Parish Sheriff’s deputy.
In the Second Justice Court, incumbent Justice of the Peace Christy Mayeux is being challenged by the same candidate she bested in 2020. Mayeux garnered 56% of the vote against James Landry six years ago. Landry is giving it another go on November 3.
The court’s constable race features another rematch, Thomas Mayeux looks to defeat Danny Thibodeaux again. It was Mayeux (51%) over Thibodeaux (49%) in 2020.
