How does SB 121 Congressional map affect Ascension?

In the wake of Louisiana v. Callais, in which the Supreme Court overturned the state Congressional map, speculation centered on whether the Republic legislative supermajorities would undo both majority-minority districts approved for the 2024 elections.  Senate Bill 121, which the Senate passed yesterday by a 27-10 partisan vote, preserves District 2’s status (District 6, currently represented by Cleo Fields, looks to be on the way out).  With the House of Representatives expected to add its approval, what does SB 121 mean for Ascension Parish’s Congressional map?

The bill’s verbiage, as it relates to Ascension Parish voting precincts:

(2) District 2 is composed of Precincts 45, 47, 48, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55 and 57 of Ascension Parish…

(6) District 6 is composed of Precincts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 58, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69, 71, 72, 73, 76, 77 and 78 of Ascension Parish.

Congressional Map for 2024 election

The current District 2, represented by Troy Carter, includes every voting precinct inside the City of Gonzales’ municipal limits as well as most precincts situated west of Hwy 44 on the east bank.  When SB 121 takes effect, all precincts east of the Mississippi River will shift into the newly configured District 6.  In 2024, three of Louisiana’s six Congressional district elections were conducted in Ascension Parish voting precincts (District 5, in yellow above, extended south of Bayou Manchac.

District 2 will be contested exclusively on the west bank.
