USS Kidd return delayed by historically low water levels

The return of the USS Kidd to its protective cradle along the Baton Rouge riverfront has been temporarily delayed due to historically low water levels on the Mississippi River.  While this development prevents the ship’s scheduled reinstallation in May, the team behind the beloved historic vessel remains optimistic and energized about her eventual return to a prominent and celebrated place in the heart of downtown Baton Rouge.

Current river conditions have made it unsafe to position the ship back into its cradle at this time.  As a result, the highly anticipated “Welcome Home” celebration originally planned for May 23rd will be postponed.  Organizers emphasize that this decision was made with the utmost care for the long-term preservation of the vessel.

“Our team is actively exploring all available options and working diligently to bring the USS Kidd back as quickly and safely as possible,” said Les Nicholson, Chairman of the Louisiana Naval War Memorial Commission. “While we’re disappointed by the delay, we are incredibly excited about her return and the role she will continue to play as a centerpiece of Baton Rouge’s riverfront.”

The entire team of dedicated supporters—including staff, sponsors, community partners, and stakeholders—remains fully committed to ensuring the ship’s safe return and long-term future.  Updates on next steps and revised timelines will be shared as more information becomes available.

In the meantime, the museum will continue to offer a robust lineup of programming and visitor experiences.  Educational activities, tours, and on-site engagement will remain ongoing, ensuring that the public can continue to connect with the ship’s rich history. Additional events and initiatives are currently in development and will be announced soon, including potential seasonal programming such as a “Pirates Ball” and other creative community gatherings.

To support ongoing preservation efforts, a series of fundraising events and opportunities will roll out in the coming months.  Community support will be critical during this time, and organizers encourage the public to stay engaged and involved.

Supporters who would like to help ensure the continued preservation and future return of the USS Kidd to its rightful home on the Baton Rouge riverfront are encouraged to make a tax-deductible donation to assist ongoing restoration, transportation, and operational efforts.  Donation link: https://www.usskidd.com/product/donations/
