Louisiana Labor Unions offer statement on close Senate election

Strong Jamie Davis Showing and Gregory Carroll Win Show that Louisiana Voters Want People Who Fight for Working Families

Louisiana AFL-CIO President Matt Wood released the following statement in response to Gregory Carroll being elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives to represent District 92 and Jamie Davis making a strong showing in the U.S. Senate race:

“Working people have spoken and they are ready for real change in Louisiana. Jamie Davis’ strong showing in the U.S. Senate election and Gregory Carroll’s overwhelming victory in State House District 92 are wins for anyone who has put off going to the doctor because they can’t afford the hospital bill, every worker who has been told that fair wages and a union contract aren’t possible here, and for every family that’s sick and tired of watching billionaire CEOs rake in record breaking profits while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet.

“Working people are ready for lawmakers in Baton Rouge and Washington D.C. who will work for them, not ultra-wealthy corporate donors. Last night’s results show that politics these days aren’t about left or right, Democrat or Republican, but about who is willing to stand up for working people in a time when so many of them are struggling.

“Louisiana’s labor movement is committed to fighting for a better life for all workers. One with higher paychecks you can raise a family on and with leaders who prioritize good jobs with quality benefits. Working people around the state aren’t asking for something impossible. Being able to afford a home, health care, groceries, and utilities, while also being able to enjoy a vacation with our families once in a while isn’t a radical idea.

“It’s time to get to work toward building a brighter future for Louisiana’s working families.”
