Hurricane Preparedness: Prepare your home

Taking steps to prepare your home before a storm is one of the best ways to protect your family, property, and peace of mind.

Before severe weather arrives, remember to:

🌳 Trim trees and shrubs to reduce the risk of falling limbs.
🪑 Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, grills, and other loose items that could become airborne.
🪟 Install hurricane shutters or have pre-cut plywood ready to protect windows.
📁 Store important documents in a waterproof container, including insurance policies, birth certificates, Social Security cards, passports, marriage certificates, and banking information.
📸 Document your property by taking clear photos or videos of your home and valuables for insurance purposes.
🧰 Prepare an emergency supply kit with enough food, water, medications, and essentials for at least three days. Don’t forget the unique needs of children, older adults, and pets.
🚗 Fill your vehicle’s gas tank before a storm approaches.
❄️ Set your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting to help preserve food if the power goes out.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make an evacuation plan and establish a meeting place or communication plan for your family.

Don’t wait until a storm is in the Gulf—take time now to prepare your home and protect what matters most
