Ascension President Clint Cointment
To borrow a descriptive from the second place finisher in Saturday’s election for Ascension Parish President, the Cointment Juggernaut Political Machine rolled on. Like the only other parish-wide election on the ballot, Parish President Clint Cointment won a second term with the largest vote share of any candidate in Ascension’s history of Home Rule. His opponent may be onto something since perceived allegiance to Cointment carried the day for every Parish Council candidate on the ballot too.
With 72.5% of the total votes cast (20,990 out of 28,955), it nosed out the 72% share achieved by the winner (Tommy Martinez) in 2011, the only other incumbent to win reelection.
Seven of eleven governing authority seats were occupied by Cointment antagonists from the beginning of 2020. All seven occupants will see their council careers ended when the next council is inaugurated in January. Six of them had egregiously miscalculated the lay of the political landscape in 2021…
EA Drainage’s 2021 coup attempt is over (Cointment wins big)
Attempting Cointment’s ouster from East Ascension Drainage operations/administration, it was going to be difficult to survive even after fending off the recall petitions filed against every one of them. In January there will be a notably more cooperative council, bad for click-bait starved political pundits but great for Ascension Parish.
In an uneventful campaign season, depressed voter turnout had little to no bearing on Cointment’s victory (though it may have cost candidates further down the ballot). Cointment won all but two of Ascension’s 72 voting precincts, most of them handily. Two west bank precincts went against him.
Uniformly, the winner’s lower (but still winning) precinct vote share came in three municipalities, particularly in Donaldsonville. Cointment topped 80% in 13 precincts, went over 70% in 32 more. All in all, a pretty successful night for the incumbent.
