Guilty Pleas for the Week of May 4-8

During the week of May 4 – May 8, 2026, the following defendants pled guilty to various charges and were sentenced in the 23rd Judicial District Court – Ascension Parish:

  • Kendell Gray, Houston, TX, age 36, pled guilty to Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substance and was sentenced to 24 months with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 24 months supervised probation.
  • Gerald Taylor, Port Allen, LA, age 29, pled guilty to Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substance and Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Dangerous Substance. The defendant was sentenced to 3 ½ years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 36 months supervised probation.
  • Curran Steele, Albany, LA, age 37, pled guilty to Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Dangerous Substance and Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substance. The defendant was sentenced to 4 ½ years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.
  • On January 7, 2026, Franklin Darville III, Prairieville, LA, age 35, pled guilty to Possession with Intent to Distribute a Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substance, Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl, and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance. Sentencing was deferred to a later date pending a Pre-Sentence Investigation. On May 4, 2026, Darville was sentenced to 25 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.
  • Daniel Bateman, Plaquemine, LA, age 49, pled guilty to Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substance (3 counts) and Possession of Fentanyl. The defendant was sentenced to 9 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 5 years supervised probation.
  • Shandolan Carey, Geismar, LA, age 49, pled guilty to Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substance and Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Dangerous Substance. The defendant was sentenced to 3 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 5 years supervised probation.
  • Phillip Ricard II, Baton Rouge, LA, age 31, pled guilty to Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance and was sentenced to 3 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 3 years supervised probation.

The above cases were prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Charles “Chuck” Long, Robin O’Bannon, and Kenneth Dupaty, Presiding over these matters was the Honorable Judge John Smith.
