In a stunning victory Tim Riley beat the incumbent for Gonzales City Council-Division A, David Guitreau on Tuesday. For those paying attention it was not so much that Riley won, but the margin (57%-43%) that caused surprise. The councilman-elect earned every vote with a herculean campaign effort that Riley funded personally.
Riley beat Guitreau early (56%-44%) and beat him worse on Election Day.
Guitreau was supported by the Gonzales’ old guard which, in and of itself, caused observers to overestimate his electoral chances. Riley bested Guitreau in most voting precincts, all save those south of I-10 which includes Conway Subdivision and not much else, and the city’s most northern area along Bayou Narcisse Road.
