The Parish of Ascension and its Animal Services Board have re-engaged with our team to find new properties for the animal shelter location. We received very helpful feedback from our public meeting that was held in February and have taken that information to help steer the search for future proposed locations. We have also tasked Shelter Planners of America to help modify our shelter design to better accommodate the concerns raised regarding noise and smell, as these may be issues no matter where the shelter is located. As a reminder, this shelter is funded by a one-mill property tax collected since 2019.
Here are the criteria we are looking at for a new property:
- Five (5) or more acres are needed for the facility to be located on
- This land would preferably already be zoned MU
- Not located in a flood zone
- By law, the Parish is not allowed to pay over the appraised value of the land
- Distanced away from residential areas
The Administration and Animal Services Board are ready to finalize the conceptual plan once a site is obtained, then we will proceed to go out for an RFQ for architectural/engineering services for the construction complete design and finally do an RFP for the construction of the animal shelter. “While there are many steps in this process and we have seen some setbacks, I’m optimistic that our staff and Animal Services Board can accomplish locating a site and preparing for a ground breaking!” stated President Cointment
