AP Baseball/Girl Scouts help with flag ceremony at National Cemetery

Ascension Parish Girl Scout Seniors from Troops 10286 and 10205, along with several players from the Ascension Parish Baseball League, spent the morning placing flags on graves at the Port Hudson National Cemetery in honor of our fallen service members.

This meaningful tradition began several years ago through the efforts of Coach John Murphy in partnership with the Wreaths Across America program.

Each year, Coach Murphy invites youth from across the parish to pay their respects through Memorial Day flag placement and by assisting with the wreath ceremony held in December.

These moments offer young people the opportunity to learn about those who served our country, hear stories and memories shared at gravesites, and gain a deeper understanding of military traditions.

If you’re lucky, Coach John may even explain the meaning behind the coins sometimes left on headstones—a small but powerful symbol of remembrance and respect.
