Superintendent’s message after challenging end to school year

Ascension School Superintendent David Alexander

Dear Ascension Public Schools Families,

Classes officially ended last week for the 2019-20 school year. We are always impressed with the work and progress our students make each year, and this year is no different in spite of our challenges in the 4th Quarter.

We are happy that our students had opportunities to continue their learning during this unprecedented closure of school buildings. And, we are extremely grateful for the commitment and hard work of our teachers and principals to ensure services took place throughout these past months. Finally, we want to give a big huge shout out to our parents for your patience and partnership to help us provide educational opportunities to your children.

During the week ahead we will be closing out student records, sending out report cards, collecting devices and non-consumable instructional resources, and providing you with guidance and recommendations about continued learning during the month of June for those students that need additional time and support. Details about how this will take place will be coming from your school’s principal.

We are still working on plans for graduation. You have all received some information from your respective schools and there will be more to come. We remain hopeful that we can organize the event to properly abide by the guidelines listed in the new Executive Order, which was released late yesterday. We want to express our appreciation, in advance, for your commitment and cooperation to follow all the guidelines that we will provide so that everyone can enjoy this special time dedicated to recognizing the Ascension Parish Class of 2020. It will be very important that we all be aware of the strict social distancing guidelines, which will be required. We will be providing more details throughout next week about procedures that will help us ensure that these guidelines are protected. We know that this event will not include the traditional hugs, high fives, and arm-in-arm alma mater endings, but we believe with your cooperation this will be an honorable moment for the hard work of our graduates as they celebrate together in their caps and gowns.

We hope you all have a great summer! We will continue to stay in touch throughout the weeks ahead to provide updates as we continue to take steps to more normal routines. Stay safe.

Respectfully,

David Alexander
Superintendent
Ascension Public Schools
