Oak Lake developers will be excited to hear…Conway Roundabout construction kickoff meeting scheduled

A “construction kickoff” meeting for the roundabout planned for Hwy 44 at the entrance/exit of Conway subdivision in south Gonzales is scheduled for Wednesday, December 5.  That is according to City of Gonzales Engineer Jackie Baumann who excitedly informed the city council on Monday.

The roundabout, or lack thereof, has delayed a subdivision on the west side of Hwy 44 in unincorporated Ascension Parish where Oak Lake is under construction.

Developer withdraws request to nullify roundabout requirement at Oak Lake Subdivision

On December 9, 2015 Ascension’s Planning Commission approved Oak Lake’s preliminary plat “contingent on a round-about be already constructed or a turn lane be required by the time the second phase, final plat is proposed.”  Subsequent negotiations resulted in the developer, DR Horton’s ability to sell lots in Phase 1, and they sold like hotcakes.  The company’s engineer, Jake Lambert appeared before the Commission earlier this month to protest the Commission’s refusal to grant a variance allowing DR Horton to begin selling lots in Phases 2 and 3.

Will this change the commission’s stance?

“If there’s not a roundabout or a turn lane I’m going to be very hard-pressed to vote to approve any final plat,” offered Chairman Matthew Pryor on November 14, attempting to assuage Lambert’s obvious frustration while bolstering his well-earned pro-development reputation.  “I’m not being hard on you, not being hard on development.  I favor development as a general rule,” Pryor admitted what every casual observer has known for years.

Lambert warned that he would be back seeking Final Plat approval at the December 12 meeting; and Pryor did leave the door ajar.  The chairman said his position might soften if construction of the roundabout were planned, not actually built like the preliminary plat approval required.
